As part of his preparation for the marathon, Dan is blogging about his training. Here is his latest update:

“Easter is often time for relaxing for many, seeing family and enjoying time with the family. For a London marathon entrant, it also marked a symbolic last long run before race date.

So as everyone was tucking into chocolate eggs, I was pounding my way around 18 miles of pavement, made all the more difficult by my decision not to have breakfast so I would ‘hit the wall’. I managed to push through this through the comfort of all my friends and family who have supported me to date in raising funds for Bromley & Lewisham mind, a charity close to my heart.

With the bulk of training over bar the taper, it is time to evaluate how it went.

Well, training in March was somewhat a mixture of highs and lows. Early in the month, I ran my fastest ever 10k, following it with 15 miles within my target pace.

However, the following week when going for an 18 mile attempt my muscles felt like they were burning after a mile. Trying to run it off failed, and so at 2 miles I decided to turn back. The soreness remained for 2 weeks, but by listening to my body and abstaining from training was the right decision. After all I would rather be on the start line underprepared than not at all through injury!

My return after the two weeks went somewhat better in that I managed to step up to my 18 mile target. This was not as comfortable as I would have liked, however I did manage it without water, energy gels or breakfast. I hit the 18 slightly outside of my target time, however with sustenance I may not fade as early as I did in the last long training run.

The pleasing part is that the bulk of training is now over. All that is left is the taper and the race.”

At Bromley & Lewisham Mind, we would like to wish Dan the best of luck with running the Virgin Money London Marathon on 26 April. Remember, you can support Dan by sponsoring him on his JustGiving page.
